Discover Kullvi Whims: Reviving Himalayan Craftsmanship in the Kullu Valley

Kullvi Whims Kullu Valley

In the heart of the Kullu Valley is a group of women revitalising their traditional craft practices.

Nestled in the picturesque Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Kullvi Whims is a women-led collective dedicated to preserving and revitalizing traditional Himalayan craftsmanship.
Founded in 2012 by Nisha Subramaniam and Brighu Acharya, the collective collaborates with the indigenous Gaddi tribe, known for their nomadic sheep herding practices, to source indigenous wool and create handcrafted textiles that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region.

We came across Kullvi Whims at DASTKAR Delhi (craft fair) in January 2024, after chasing down Brighu to ask where his wonderfully crafted patchwork sweater was from.

This chance encounter landed us in an unexpected world of colourful Kullvi treasures and a marvellous story of the interdependent community systems they are cultivating.

Crafting Stories Through Handspun Wool

This cooperative is more than just a business; it is a powerful story of women leading the preservation of indigenous knowledge and revitalising traditional handloom practices. The collective provides fair wages, skill development, and a platform for women artisans to showcase their work, ensuring the continuity of traditional crafts in the modern world.

They source indigenous wool from a local pastoral tribe called the Gaddis, which they then naturally dye with local flora and fauna. These pieces tell the story of the Himalayan Landscape from sheep to sweater, and nourish the communities economy from a sustainable root level.

We at The ANJELMS Project are proud to be contributing to the global exposure of their craft by stocking their pieces.
